During my school years, I heard a lot about Allama Iqbal’s Shikwa Jawab e Shikwa. I am nowhere near being a literary expert, but I think no study of Urdu poetry would be complete without including Allama Iqbal’s work in it.
During my freshman year in college, I took a course in Expository Writing. The professor prescribed several fiction and non-fiction pieces to the class, for reading, etc. One of those pieces was “The Book of Job” by Stephen Mitchell. I had to study the book for class assignment and it left a strong impression on me.
Later on in life, I realized that Shikwa Jawaab e Shikwa and The Book of Job revolve around a similar concept; A complaint to God. Why does a good man/people, have to suffer, for no good reason?
The Book of Job is called “the greatest Jewish work of art…” and Shikwa, Jawab-e-Shikwa are known as masterpieces of Urdu literature.
I wanted to share notes/explanations of these 2 important works here, in testament to one of the most important questions raised by a person to The Creator. Why me?
The videos shown below are just a few of several explanatory videos found on the web. Please explore and study to form your own opinion, of course.
